The Orion TI30XS is based on the popular TI30XS MultiView™ Scientific Calculator made by Texas Instruments Incorporated. It is specially modified for accessibility for users with visual impairment. The functionality and operation of the Orion TI30XS are identical in all respects to the standard TI30XS Calculator. The only differences are additional controls, jacks, speakers, and software for accessible feedback of the calculator's output and the user's input.

For the purposes of this guide, the standard TI30XS MultiView™ Scientific Calculator from Texas Instruments Incorporated is referred to as the TI30XS. The Orion TI30XS MultiView™ Talking Scientific Calculator is referred to as the Orion TI30XS.
In order to make this document accessible for all users, we indicate keys on the TI30XS portion of the calculator with a bold font. For visual and audio clarification purposes, we also use brackets around the words or symbols for a particular keys, 2nd functions, or menu items when necessary. For example, the key marked "sto right arrow" (store) is designated as [sto right arrow] and the 2nd function marked "right arrow %" is designated as [right arrow %]. Everything within the brackets is one key press.
If using the NVDA screen reader, it is recommended that you change the default setting from "read some punctuation" to "read most punctuation" for the best listening comprehension of this guide.
Note: As of July 2015, the MathML used in this guide to display the text of particular keys of the TI30XS, and for certain examples/problems in the text, only renders properly in the Firefox browser. Each section is followed by instructions for keystroke examples that demonstrate the TI30XS functions.
Examples are presented with the calculator in classic mode and with default settings as shown in the Modes section.

This section helps you become familiar with the location and various functions of your Orion TI30XS.
To begin the exploration process, position the Orion TI30XS so that the keys face up and the ports are at the top, as shown below.
This is the normal operating position. When holding the calculator or if it is lying on a flat surface with the keys facing up, the ports at the top of the calculator are the earphone jack on the left and the USB MicroB port on the right. (In the picture below the ports look reversed because they are facing you instead of away from you.)
Above the screen on the face of the Calculator are three keys in a horizontal region. The label on the keys from left to right are A, S/L, and ↺R which stand for Access, Silence/Learn, and Repeat. These three keys are the Orion Access keys (shown below).
The keys on the bottom half of the calculator are the TI30XS keys (shown below). There are 41 keys laid out in five rows and nine columns and a fourkey directional pad in the topright corner. The four keys of the directional pad are the arrow keys for the TI30XS. The power on key is in the bottomleft corner, diagonally opposite from the directional pad. It has a raised outline on the bottomleft corner of the key.
The screen (shown below) is the rectangular, flat section between the Orion Access keys (on the top) and the TI30XS keys (on the bottom).
The Orion TI30XS comes with a built in userreplaceable chargeable battery. It is imperative that this calculator be fully charged prior to firsttime use. The chargeable battery in the Orion TI30XS lasts several days, depending on usage. Always charge the unit before any important test or assignment.
Follow these steps to charge the device:
Note: Fully charge the battery prior to firsttime use of the calculator. This should take about 4 hours. You can use the Orion TI30XS while it is charging.

The display is cleared, but the history, settings, and memory are retained.
Note: The Automatic Power Down™ (APD™) feature turns off the TI30XS calculator automatically if no key is pressed for about 5 minutes. Press on after APD. The display, pending operations, settings, and memory are retained. If you were using the Learn mode, the calculator returns to the location and procedure prior to the initiation of Learn mode.
The Orion TI30XS has three keys at the top of the unit and above the screen that control the accessibility features. This region is what is known as the Orion accessory which was added to the original TI30XS to make it accessible for individuals with visually impairment.
The keys are (from left to right) Access, Silence/Learn , and Repeat.
Each of the Orion Access keys has multiple functions depending on how they are pressed, tapped, long pressed, or used in combination with the Access key. The following sections explain the use of the three Orion Access keys.
Holding the A key with a long press enters Orion settings which allows you to change settings such as speed and/or volume. Pressing and holding the A key again turns off Orion settings. Pressing a nonOrion settings key also exits the Orion settings. See Orion Settings for more accessibility information.
Holding this key with a long press switches the calculator to Learn mode.
The Orion TI30XS is equipped with a Learn mode designed to assist you with locating keys and confirming their functionality. Learn mode can be used at any time. When the unit is in Learn mode, the calculator retains its previous status. For example, if you are in the middle of an operation and enter the Learn mode, the calculator operation is not interrupted and the display remains unchanged.
To enter Learn mode, press and hold the middle Orion Access key (S/L) located at the top of the calculator and above the screen.
In Learn mode, to assist you with locating a particular key, each key and its primary function is announced when pressed. When used in combination with the 2nd key, the Orion TI30XS announces the secondary function for the pressed key.
To exit Learn mode, press and hold the middle Orion Access key (S/L). The calculator returns to the speech and operational mode at precisely the same point you were at prior to entering Learn mode, and it restores all the previously set preferences.
To enter Orion Settings press and hold the Access key until Orion setting on is announced. When in Orion Settings the following keys and functions are available:

On the Home screen, you can enter mathematical expressions and functions, along with other instructions. The answers are displayed on the Home screen. The TI30XS screen can display a maximum of four lines with up to 16 characters per line. For entries and expressions of more than 16 characters, you can scroll left and right by pressing the right arrow or left arrow on the directional pad to view the entire entry or expression. Similarly, to view entries and expressions that are more than four lines, you can scroll up and down by pressing the up and down arrows on the directional pad.
The Orion TI30XS has the ability to display math in both Classic and MathPrint™ mode. Classic mode displays input and output on a single line on screen and is fully accessible. Due to the difficulty in accessing information not on the screen, MathPrint mode is not accessible. When the Orion accessibility is muted, MathPrint mode still works and can be used by visual users of the calculator. If the MathPrint mode is active, a message is announced indicating that MathPrint is not supported and instruction is given to change to Classic mode. (See the Modes section to learn how to switch to Classic mode.)
It is not necessary to use MathPrint mode to use the full functionality of the TI30XS. If you want to know more about MathPrint mode, see the TI30XS Scientific Calculator documentation from Texas Instruments Incorporated.
When you calculate an entry on the Home screen, depending upon space, the answer is displayed either directly to the right of the entry or on the right side of the next line.
Special indicators may display on the screen to provide additional information concerning functions or results. These are spoken when needed.

2nd
Most keys can perform two functions. The primary function is indicated on the key and the secondary function is displayed above it. Press 2nd to activate the secondary function of a given key. Notice that 2nd appears as an indicator on the screen. To cancel it before entering data, press 2nd again. For example, 2nd [√] 25 enter calculates the square root of 25 and returns the result, 5.
mode
Use mode to choose modes. Press down arrow, up arrow, left arrow, or right arrow to choose a mode, and enter to select it. Press clear or 2nd [quit] to return to the Home screen and perform your work using the chosen mode settings.
Default mode settings are shown highlighted (DEG, NORM, FLOAT, MATHPRINT).
DEG RAD GRAD Sets the angle mode to degrees, radians, or gradians.
NORM SCI ENG Sets the numeric notation mode. Numeric notation modes affect only the display of results, and not the accuracy of the values stored in the unit, which remain maximal.
NORM displays results with digits to the left and right of the decimal, as in 123456.78.
SCI expresses numbers with one digit to the left of the decimal and the appropriate power of 10, as in 1.2345678∗10⁵ (which is the same as 123456.78).
Note: In some restricted environments (for example function table, data editor, and the 2nd [recall] menu), the TI30XS calculator may display E instead of ∗10ⁿ.
ENG displays results as a number from 1 to 999 times 10 to an integer power. The integer power is always a multiple of 3.
Note: ×10ⁿ is a shortcut key to enter a number in scientific notation format. The result displays in the numeric notation format set in mode.
FLOAT 0123456789 Sets the decimal notation mode.
FLOAT (floating decimal point) displays up to 10 digits, plus the sign and decimal.
0123456789 (fixed decimal point) specifies the number of digits (0 through 9) to display to the right of the decimal.
CLASSIC MATHPRINT™
CLASSIC mode displays inputs and outputs in a single line.
MathPrint mode displays most inputs and outputs in textbook format.
Note: The Orion TI30XS has the ability to display math in both Classic and MathPrint™ mode. Classic mode displays input and output on a single line on screen and is fully accessible. Due to the difficulty in accessing information not on the screen, MathPrint mode is not accessible. When the Orion accessibility is muted, MathPrint mode still works and can be used by visual users of the calculator. If the MathPrint mode is active, a message is announced indicating that MathPrint is not supported and instruction is given to change to Classic mode.
Certain keys display menus: prb, 2nd [angle], data, 2nd [stat], 2nd [reset], 2nd [recall], and 2nd [clear var]. Some keys may display more than one menu.
Press right arrow and down arrow to scroll and select a menu item, or press the corresponding number next to the menu item. To return to the previous screen without selecting the item, press clear. To exit a menu or application and return to the Home screen, press 2nd [quit].
The lists below show the menu keys and the menus they display.
Press data while you are in the Add/Edit Formula option of the FORMULA menu to display this menu:

Press left arrow or right arrow to place the cursor horizontally over the expression entered. Press 2nd, left arrow or 2nd, right arrow to move the cursor directly to the beginning or end of the expression.
After an expression is evaluated, use up arrow and down arrow to scroll through previous entries, which are stored in the TI30XS calculator's memory. You can reuse a previous entry by pressing enter to paste it on the bottom line, and then evaluating a new expression.

2nd [ans]
The most recently calculated result is stored to the variable Ans. Ans is retained in memory, even after the TI30XS calculator is turned off. To recall the value of Ans:
The TI30XS calculator uses Equation Operating System (EOS™) to evaluate expressions. Within a priority level, EOS evaluates functions from left to right and in the following order.
1st  Expressions inside parentheses 
2nd  Functions that need a ) and precede the argument, such as sin, log, and all [R leftright arrow P] menu items 
3rd  Fractions 
4th  Functions that are entered after the argument, such as x² and angle unit modifiers

The TI30XS calculator defaults output to improper fractions. Results are automatically simplified.

2nd [angle]
2nd [angle] displays the choice of two submenus that enable you to specify the angle unit modifier as degrees (°), minutes ('), seconds ("); radian (r); gradian (g), or convert units using [right arrow DMS]. You can also convert between rectangular coordinate form (R) and polar coordinate form (P). (See Rectangular to Polar for more information.)
Choose an angle mode from the mode screen. You can choose from DEG (default), RAD, or GRAD. Entries are interpreted and results displayed according to the angle mode setting without needing to enter an angle unit modifier.

The TI30XS calculator has 7 memory variables: x, y, z, t, a, b, and c. You can store a real number or an expression that results in a real number to a memory variable.

STAT  Attempting to calculate 1var or 2var stats with no defined data points, or attempting to calculate 2var stats when the data lists are not of equal length. 
DIM MISMATCH  Attempting to create a formula when the lists are not of equal length. 
FORMULA  The formula does not contain a list name (L1, L2, or L3), or the formula for a list contains its own list name. For example, a formula for L1 contains L1. 
SYNTAX  The command contains a syntax error: entering more than 23 pending operations or 8 pending values; or having misplaced functions, arguments, parentheses, or commas. If using n/d, try using ÷. 
INVALID FUNCTION  Invalid function entered in the function table. 
LOW BATTERY  Replace the battery. Note: This message displays briefly and then disappears. Pressing clear does not clear this message. 
Review instructions to be certain calculations were performed properly.

If a hardware defect arises and a valid claim is received by APH within the Warranty Period, at its option and to the extent permitted by law, APH will either:
A replacement product or part provided by APH or its manufacturer assumes the remaining warranty of the original product or thirty (30) days from the date of replacement or repair, whichever provides longer coverage for you. When a product or part is exchanged, any replacement item becomes your property and the replaced item becomes APH's property.
