The following enhancements and corrections were made to Book Port, Book Port Transfer software, and the documentation.
If these file types are already associated with another program, the software does not alter the associations in any way. If, however, these two file extensions are not already associated with another program, they get assigned to Book Port Transfer. This accomplishes two things: First, when one opens a link for a file of one of these types, Internet Explorer offers to open or download the file. If the user wishes to send the file directly to Book Port without having to store it on the hard disc then tries to find that downloaded file, he may select the Open option that Internet Explorer offers. It is still all right to select Open even if the Book Port is not connected, because the Book Port Transfer software will queue up the files and send them to the device all at once the next time the user connects Book Port to the computer.
Second, this new behavior corrects a very confusing characteristic about how Internet Explorer handles unassocioted files that appear to be text. That confusing characteristic is that Internet Explorer tries to help by adding a .txt extension to files it thinks are text files, so one ends up with a file on the disc with two extensions--both .brf and .txt. If, for instance, one downloaded a file named fubar.brf, it ends up on the disc named fubar.brf.txt. When this happens, Book Port no longer realizes that the file is a braille file, so it does not use the reverse translater on the file. What is worse, if one does not show file extensions (as many peaple don't), one cannot rename the file. Once Windows realizes that there is actually a program that deals with .brf and .brl files, it no longer exhibits this odd behavior, so the user gets what he expects--a .brf or .brl file.
If one had used the instructions at www.loc.gov/nls/braille to associate braille files with an application, he will want to undo what he did there. This is done by following the instructions on that page, except that once he gets to the list of file types, he should not press the New button. Instead, find the entries for brl and brf and press the Delete button for each of them. Remember, do not press the Delete button if .brl and .brf file types are associated with another program, like a braille translation program, or the user will not be able to start that program by opening a .brl or .brf file.
Unfortunately, with the earlier versions of the firmware, pressing the Record Memo key with the clock not set caused the memos folder to get corrupted. If one had an earlier version of the firmware and experience errors, he should use the Book Port Transfer software to delete the memos folder after updating the firmware. The unit automatically creates a new memos folder when the user presses the Record key.
