How to Use Snap Circuits®

Snap Circuits® uses building blocks with snaps to build the different electrical and electronic circuits in the projects. Each block has a function: there are switch blocks, light blocks, battery blocks, different length wire
blocks, etc. These blocks are different colors and have numbers, letters and braille labels on them so that you can easily identify them. The blocks you will be using are shown as color symbols in the graphical instructions and by name in the text instructions, allowing you to easily find and snap them together to form a circuit.

For Example:

This is the slide switch, it is green and has a braille 'S1' on it. The part symbols in this booklet may not exactly match the appearance of the actual parts, but will clearly identify them. You need a power source to build each
circuit. This is labeled B3 and requires three (3) 1.5V “AA” batteries (not included).

When installing a battery, be sure the spring is compressed straight back, and not bent up, down, or to one side.

Some circuits use the jumper wires to make unusual connections. Just clip them on as indicated. Often you will mount Snap Circuits® components on bric2snap adapters. These adapters are small square shaped parts with one taller post in the center of the top. Simply place the Snap Circuits® components on the posts of the adapters.

Sometimes it can be difficult to separate bric2snap adapters from the baseplate, or bricks and plates, so use the Brick Remover Tool for help as needed. The tool has a wedge at a 45 degree angle that when slipped under a bric2snap adapter, will help pry it from the baseplate. You can also use the remover to separate bricks and plates from each other.

Note that this set includes 25 of each of the bric2snap adapter pieces, more are used in projects in this booklet. Your set includes extra adapters so you can easily expand on your own using other Snap Circuits® and bricks sets you may have.

Note: While building the projects, be careful not to accidentally make a direct connection across the battery holder (a “short circuit”), as this may damage and/or quickly drain the batteries.

About Your Snap Circuits® Parts

BATTERY HOLDER

The batteries (B3) produce an electrical voltage using a chemical reaction. This “voltage” can be thought of as electrical pressure, pushing electricity through a circuit just like a pump pushes water through pipes. This voltage is much lower and much safer than that used in your house wiring. Using more batteries increases the “pressure”, therefore, more electricity flows. The negative, or flat bottom of the battery always faces the spring.

SLIDE SWITCH

The slide switch (S1) connects (“ON”) or disconnects (“OFF”) the wires in a circuit. When ON it has no effect on circuit performance. Switches turn on electricity just like a faucet turns on water from a pipe. The braille S1 label is placed on the open (ON side) of the switch.

SNAP WIRES & JUMPER WIRES

The blue 3-snap wires and jumper wires (short blue & long orange) are wires used to connect components. They are used to transport electricity and do not affect circuit performance. The 3-snap wires make rigid connections, while the jumper wires make flexible connections. Wires transport electricity just like pipes are used to transport water. The colorful plastic coating protects them and prevents electricity from getting in or out.

SOUND MODULE

The melody IC (U32) contains a specialized sound-generation integrated circuit (IC), a small speaker, and a few supporting components. The IC has a recording of the melody, which it makes into an electrical signal for the speaker. The speaker converts the signal into mechanical vibrations. The vibrations create variations LAMP in air pressure, which travel across the room. You “hear” sound when your ears feel these air pressure variations.

LEDs

The color, blue, blink red, and color2 LEDs (D8, D9, D11 & D12) are light emitting diodes, and may be thought of as a special one-way light bulbs. In the “forward” direction, (indicated by the “arrow” in the symbol) electricity flows if the voltage exceeds a turn-on threshold brightness then increases. The blink red LED contains a microcircuit that turns it on and off. The color and color2 LEDs contain red, green, and blue LEDs, with a micro-circuit controlling them. A high current will burn out an LED, so the current must be limited by other components in the circuit (Snap Circuits ® LEDs have internal resistors added, to protect them in case you make wiring mistakes). LEDs block electricity in the “reverse” direction.

LAMP

A light bulb, such as in the 4.5V lamp (L4), contains a special thin high-resistance wire. When a lot of electricity flows through, this wire gets so hot it glows bright. Voltages above the bulb’s rating can burn out the wire.

Introduction to Electricity

What is electricity? Nobody really knows. We only know how to produce it, understand its properties, and how to control it. Electricity is the movement of sub-atomic charged particles (called electrons) through a material, due to electrical pressure across the material, such as from a battery.

Power sources, such as batteries, push electricity through a circuit, like a pump pushes water through pipes. Wires carry electricity, like pipes carry water. Devices like LEDs, motors, and speakers use the energy in electricity to do things. Switches and transistors control the flow of electricity like valves and faucets control water. Resistors limit the flow of electricity.

The electrical pressure exerted by a battery or other power source is called voltage and is measured in volts (V). Notice the “+” and “–” signs on the battery; these indicate which direction the battery “pumps” the electricity.

The electric current is a measure of how fast electricity is flowing in a wire, just as the water current describes how fast water is flowing in a pipe. It is expressed in amperes (A) or milliamps (mA, 1/1000 of an ampere).

The “power” of electricity is a measure of how fast energy is moving through a wire. It is a combination of the voltage and current (Power = Voltage x Current). It is expressed in watts (W).

The resistance of a component or circuit represents how much it resists the electrical pressure (voltage) and limits the flow of electric current. The relationship is Voltage = Current x Resistance. When the resistance increases, less current flows. Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω), or kilo ohms (kΩ, 1000 ohms).

Nearly all of the electricity used in our world is produced at enormous generators driven by steam or water pressure. Wires are used to efficiently transport this energy to homes and businesses where it is used. Motors convert the electricity back into mechanical form to drive machinery and appliances. The most important aspect of electricity in our society is that it allows energy to be easily transported over distances.

Note that “distances” includes not just large distances but also tiny distances. Try to imagine a plumbing structure of the same complexity as the circuitry inside a portable radio - it would have to be large because we can’t make water pipes so small. Electricity allows complex designs to be made very small.

There are three ways of arranging parts in a circuit: in series, parallel, or a combination of the two. Here are examples:

Series Circuit:

A series circuit is one with all the loads in a row. There is only ONE path for the electricity to flow. If this circuit was a string of light bulbs and one blew out, the remaining bulbs would turn off. If your house was wired in series and your stove blew out, your lights would go out too.

The next sample projects will be used to physically describe series, parallel, and combination circuits. In the first project you will have an extra part. The extra part will be used in the parallel and combination circuits. Once you build sample project, follow along in the next sections.

Sample Circuit

Parts Needed for Series, Parallel and Combination circuits

Sample Circuit

First layer

  1. Bric2snap adapter 2x2 C8-D9
  2. Bric2snap adapter 2x2 J8-K9
  3. Bric2snap adapter 2x2 C15-D16
  4. Bric2snap adapter 2x2 J15-K16
  5. Bric2snap adapter 2x2 C22-D23
  6. Bric2snap adapter 2x2 J22-K23
  7. Plate 2x2 F1-G2

Second layer

  1. Battery Holder (B3) with negative on adapter C8-D9 and positive on adapter J8-K9
  2. 3-snap wire on bric2snap adapter C15-D16 and C22-D23
  3. 3-snap wire on bric2snap adapter J15-K16 and J22-K23

Third layer

  1. Slide Switch (S1) on Battery Holder (B3)'s negative side C8-D9 and on 3-snap wire on C15-D16
  2. 3-snap wire on Battery Holders positive side J8-K9 and on 3-snap wire on J15-K16
  3. Melody IC (U32) positive side C22-D23 and on 3-snap wire on J22-K23

In the sample circuit the switch is in series with the Melody IC. There is only one path for the current to flow from the positive side of the battery, through the melody IC, through the switch, and back to the battery on the negative side. When the switch is turned on the Melody plays.

In the above circuit replace the 3 snap wire at the positive side of the battery on J8+K9 and on the 3 snap wire on J15-K16 with the D9 LED making sure the braille label (positive side) is on J8-K9.

Try turning on the circuit now. The light will either be dim or the melody will not play at all or incorrectly. This is because these two parts in series require too much current for a series circuit with this amount of battery power.

Once again, replace the D9 LED with the 3 snap wire. Check and make sure the melody plays.

Parallel Circuit

A parallel circuit is one that has two or more paths for the electricity to flow; the loads are parallel to each other. If the loads in this circuit were light bulbs and one blew out, there is still current flowing to the rest of the circuit, because there is still a direct path from the negative to positive terminals of the battery.

A parallel circuit is one with several different paths for the electricity to travel. It's like a river that has been divided into smaller streams; however, all the streams come back together at the same point to form the river once again.

To make the series sample project into a parallel circuit, add the following step to the sample Project:

  1. Blue LED D9 on Battery Holders positive side J15-K16 and on 3-snap wire on C15-D16

Now even though the same LED is being added back to the circuit, as tried in the series circuit, the LED lights up and the melody is played. The reason is the same current is going to both the LED and the melody IC. This also means more current is being drawn from the battery.

Combination Series and Parallel Circuit:

A combination circuit is one that has a combination of series and parallel paths for the electricity to flow. Its properties are a combination of the two. In this example, the parallel section of the circuit is like a sub-circuit and is part of an overall series circuit. The parallel part of the circuit is the LED and the Melody IC. If you pull either of the two components in parallel, the rest of the circuit continues to work. If you pull the switch that is not in parallel with the other two, it breaks the whole circuit, because it is in series with the two components in parallel. Placing components in series increases the resistance; highest value dominates. Placing components in parallel decreases the resistance; lowest value dominates. The parts within these series and parallel sub-circuits may be arranged in different ways without changing what the circuit does. Large circuits are made of combinations of smaller series and parallel circuits.

DO’s and DON'Ts of Building Circuits

After building the circuits given in user guide, you may wish to experiment on your own. Use the projects as a guide, as many important design concepts are introduced throughout them. Every circuit includes a power source (the 9V battery holder or USB cable), a resistance (which might be a resistor, LED (which has an internal protection resistor), etc.), and wiring paths between them and back.

You must be careful not to create “short circuits” (very low-resistance paths across the power source, see examples below) as this damages components and/or quickly drains your batteries. ELENCO® is not responsible for parts damaged due to incorrect wiring.

You are encouraged to tell us about new programs and circuits you create. If they are unique, we will post them with your name and state on our website at: www.snapcircuits.net/learning_center/kids_creation. Send your suggestions to ELENCO: elenco@elenco.com.

ELENCO provides a circuit designer so that you can make your own Snap Circuits® drawings. This Microsoft® Word document can be downloaded from: www.snapcircuits.net/learning_center/kids_creation or through the www.snapcircuits.net website.

Some Important Guidelines

ALWAYS USE EYE PROTECTION WHEN EXPERIMENTING ON YOUR OWN.
ALWAYS include at least one component that will limit the current through a circuit, such as a lamp, melody IC, or an LED (which has an internal protection resistor).
ALWAYS use switches in conjunction with other components that will limit the current through them. Failure to do so will create a short circuit and/or damage those parts.
ALWAYS disconnect your batteries immediately and check your wiring if something appears to be getting hot.
ALWAYS Check your wiring before turning on a circuit.
NEVER connect to an electrical outlet in your home in any way.
NEVER leave a circuit unattended when it is turned on.

For all of the projects given in this book, the parts may be arranged in different ways without changing the circuit. For example, the order of parts connected in series or in parallel does not matter — what matters is how combinations of these sub-circuits are arranged together.

Note that this set includes 25 of each of the bric2snap adapter pieces, though no more than 10 are used in projects in this booklet. Your set includes extra adapters so you can easily expand on your own using other Snap Circuits® and bricks sets you may have.

Examples of Short Circuits - NEVER DO THESE!!!

Placing a 3-snap wire directly across the 5V OUT and GND snaps is a SHORT CIRCUIT.

Placing any number of snap wire connectors or wires in a series without resistance from 5V OUT to GND snaps is a SHORT CIRCUIT.

It is important that when you press a switch you do not cause a series circuit with no resistance to be formed between 5V OUT to GND snaps, which would be a short dependent on pressing the switch.

WARNING: SHOCK HAZARD - Never connect Snap Circuits® to the electrical outlets in your home in any way!

Placing a jumper wire directly across the battery snaps is a SHORT CIRCUIT.

Illustration shows complicated electrical circuit set up incorrectly due to wires directly crossing positive and negative poles on the Battery Holder

When the slide switch (S1) is turned on, this large circuit has a SHORT CIRCUIT path (as shown by the arrows). The short circuit prevents any other portions of the circuit from ever working.

Advanced Troubleshooting (Adult supervision recommended)

Elenco® is not responsible for parts damaged due to incorrect wiring.

If you suspect you have damaged parts, you can follow this procedure to systematically determine which ones need replacing:

1. Lamp (L4), color LED (D8), blue LED (D9), blink red LED (D11), color2 LED (D12), melody IC (U32), and battery holder (B3): Place batteries in holder. Place the lamp directly across the battery holder, it should light. Place the LEDs (D8, D9, D11, & D12) directly across the battery holder one at a time (LED positive to battery positive), the LED should light (D8 should change colors, D11 should be blinking, and D12 should slowly change colors). Place the melody IC directly across the battery holder (positive to positive), it should play a tune. If none work, then replace your batteries and repeat, if still bad then the battery holder is damaged.

2. Jumper wires (blue and orange): Use this mini-circuit to test each jumper wire, the lamp should light.

Illustration shows 4.5 Lamp (L4) connected directly to positive pole of Battery Holder, jumper wire from the open side connecting of lamp to negative pole of Battery Holder (L4)

3. 3-snap wires: Use this mini-circuit to test each of the 3-snap wires. The lamp should light.

Illustration shows 4.5 Lamp (L4) connected directly to positive pole of Battery Holder, a 3-snap jumper wire on the negative pole of Battery holder, and a jumper wire connecting the lamp and connecter to close the circuit

4. Slide switch (S1): Build this mini-circuit; if the lamp doesn’t light then the slide switch is bad.

Illustration shows 4.5 Lamp (L4) connected directly to positive pole of Battery Holder, the Off-On Switch (S1) connected to the negative pole of Battery holder, and a 3-snap jumper wire connecting the lamp and switch to close the circuit

SCHEMATICS AND BLUE PRINTS

After building the structures in this set, you may want to expand using parts from other brick construction and Snap Circuits® sets you already have. For this, advance planning is recommended. Think about what you want your structure to do and how you want it to look before you start building it. Electrical engineers make drawings of their circuits (called schematics), and architects make drawings for their building (called prints or floor plans). Schematics and prints are also useful in analyzing problems or making changes after the circuit or structure has been built.

Electrical schematics use simple symbols to represent the electrical components, often the same symbols that are marked on your Snap Circuits® components. Wires are represented by just lines and can be of any length. This is a schematic for the circuit in project 11:

Illustration of simple electrical circuit schematic taken from a blueprint

This is a schematic for the circuit in projects 2, 7, 8, 12, 13, and TBD; although those circuits are all constructed differently, electrically they are the same, with D8, D9, D11, D12, L4, and U32 all connected in parallel:

Illustration of theoretical parallel circuit electrical schematic drawn using Snap Circuits® components as they would appear in a blueprint

Schematics tell you how a circuit will work, but not how it is constructed. Similarly an architect’s print or floor plan of a house tells you about the layout of the house, but not colors or other details.

Illustration of architectural floorplan as it would appear in a blueprint

An architect’s drawings may show the floor plan or other information about the construction, depending on who will be using the drawing. These drawings used to be call blueprints, due to the color used when making them years ago. Notice that the symbol for a switch in electrical schematics is based on the architect’s symbol for a door.

IMPORTANT: All capacitors and LEDs have a positive and negative side. Their braille name label will always be on the positive side of the part. It is important to make sure the parts are always placed correctly, with positive side of the part placed exactly as specified.

Accessibility tips and tricks

The Bric Structure kit can be a little more complicated than Snap Circuit kits without the Bric parts. Below are some tips and tricks to help decomplicate and make the projects easier to build and enjoy.

Before building

The instructions use names for all the parts. It is important to know which name goes with each part. Before building, go through the parts list and find one of each of the pieces. Knowing what they are makes finding them later much easier and less frustrating.

Keep kit parts sorted

The Bric parts come in bags. Unfortunately, they are not packaged in reusable packages. To make selection of parts easier, it is important to sort the parts so that they can easily be found. Small zip lock sandwich bags or containers with the ability to seal are great ways to keep the parts sorted.

Some Bric builders suggest sorting the parts so that the way they are sorted make sense to the person building the project. One builder might like all the smallest pieces in one bag, and all the thicker pieces in another. No matter how the decision is made to sort them, come up with a method and use as many containers as is needed to make parts easy to find.

Select parts needed for project

At the start of each project there is a list of the parts and number of each part needed. Finding and placing all the parts needed for a project in a small container before starting a project makes them easier to find, and makes completing the project faster and more fun.

Determining if lights are on or off

For those who cannot visually tell if the LED’s or lights used in a project are on or off, one possible method of examining the light is using a light sensor. Both Android and iOS have applications with a light sensor. A stand-alone light sensor such as some of the color tellers can also be used to detect the lights status.

Parts to make projects more accessible

Everything possible has been done to make this kit accessible without adding external parts. To enhance the project accessibility, LEDs and lights can be exchanged for either the melody piece or a piece which does not come with the kit. If earlier kits are available at hand, such as the RC Rover or the Snap Circuit Jr., the LED or light can be replaced by either the Melody or Horn Snap Circuit pieces to make the device sound rather than light.

A horn and two snap wire cables can also be used to make sure a light is blinking by placing it in parallel with the LED. This can be done by connecting Snap Wire cables to both sides of a Horn and then holding them against the snaps of the LED while in the circuit. If the LED or light is blinking the horn sounds when the LED is on and goes silence when it is off. This can be used to test multiple lights in a circuit by moving it from one to the next.

If extra horn parts are needed, they can be found at:

https://shop.elenco.com/consumers/horn.html

Extra melody chips can be found at:

https://shop.elenco.com/consumers/melody-ic.html

Project 1: START CIRCUIT

Snap Circuits® uses electronic blocks that snap onto pegs to build different circuits. These blocks have different colors and numbers on them so you can easily identify them.
Place 4 bric2snap adapters and one 2x2 plate on the baseplate as shown. Then mount the 3-snap wire and battery holder (B3) on the adapters. Next, place the slide switch (S1) and color LED (D8) on the other parts, as shown. Install three (3) “AA” batteries (not included) into the battery holder (B3) if you have not done so already; be sure the battery springs are compressed straight back, and not bent up, down, or to one side.

Parts Needed

First layer

  1. Bric2snap adapter 1x2 B2-C2
  2. Bric2snap adapter 1x2 B9-C9
  3. Bric2snap adapter 1x2 I2-J2
  4. Bric2snap adapter 1x2 I9-J2
  5. Plate 2x2 F15-G16

Second layer

  1. 3-snap wire on bric2snap adapter B2-C2 and I2-J2
  2. Battery Holder (B3) with positive on adapter B9-C9 and negative on adapter I9-J9

Third layer

  1. Slide Switch (S1) on 3-snap wire on B2-C2 and on Battery Holder (B3)'s positive side B9-C9
  2. Color LED D8 on 3-snap wire on I2-J2 and on Battery Holders negative side I9-J9

Fourth layer

  1. Mounting Base on the center of the Color LED (D8) on I2-J2 and I9-J9 with the Fiber Optic Tree on top, covering the LED
NOTE: this circuit (and many others in this book) have an LED being used without a resistor or other component to limit the electric current through it. Normally this could damage an LED but your Snap Circuits® LEDs include internal protection resistors, & will not be damaged. Be careful if you later use other electrical sets with unprotected LEDs. The festive tree and egg may also be used with other Snap Circuits ® LEDs from different sets.

Turn on the slide switch (S1), and enjoy the light show from the color LED (D8). For best effects, place the fiber optic tree on the color LED (D8) using the mounting base, and dim the room lights.
Variants:
A. Replace the color LED (D8) with the color2 LED (D12). The color2 LED (D12)
changes colors more slowly.
B. Replace the color2 LED (D12) with the blue LED (D9).
C. Replace the blue LED (D9) with the blink red LED (D11).
D. Replace the blink red LED (D11) with the lamp (L4).
E. Replace the lamp (L4) with the melody IC (U32, “positive” on left).

Snappy says when you turn on the slide switch, electricity flows from the batteries, through the color LED and back to the battery through the switch. If the switch is off, the flow of electricity is blocked, and the color LED won’t light. LEDs are light emitting diodes, which convert electrical energy into light. The color of the light depends on the characteristics of the material used in them. The color LED actually contains separate red, green, and blue lights, with a micro-circuit controlling them; the colors can be combined to produce yellow, cyan, purple, and white.

Project 2: 5 LIGHTS AND A MELODY

Build the circuit as described below, and turn on the slide switch (S1). The lamp (L4) and 4 LEDs (D8, D9, D11, & D12) light, and the melody IC (U32) plays. For best effects, place the fiber optic tree on one of the LEDs using the mounting base, and dim the room lights.

Here the color LED and blink red LED are connected in parallel, and then connected in series with the color2 LED, to produce some interesting effects. The electricity from the batteries flows through the color2 LED, then splits up between the color and blink red LEDs, then re-combines in the switch before returning to the batteries.
When LEDs are connected in series the battery voltage may not be strong enough to fully turn them on. Red light is easier to produce then the other colors, and so turns on more easily.
