The equals sign is a sign of comparison. It is a two-cell symbol with dots four six in the first cell and dots one three in the second.

The equals sign, and all other signs of comparison have a blank space before and after the symbol. If a numeral follows the equals sign, it must be preceded by the numeric indicator because there is a space between the numeral and the equals sign.
